Some water is normal, but only outside
When an AC cools the air, water collects inside the indoor unit and runs out through a small drain pipe, usually to the outside. Water dripping from the pipe outside is normal. Water dripping or running down inside the room is not.
Common reasons
- The drain pipe is blocked by dust or slime, so water backs up and spills.
- The filter is very dirty, so airflow drops and ice can form on the coil. When the ice melts, it drips.
- Low gas can also make the coil freeze. Refilling without finding the leak only helps for a while.
- The indoor unit is fitted tilted the wrong way, so water cannot reach the drain.
What to do
- Turn the AC off at the remote and put a bucket or towel under the drip.
- If the unit is covered in ice, leave it off until the ice melts. Running it on ice can harm the compressor.
- Wash the filter as the manual says, dry it fully, and put it back. A clean filter is the easiest fix.
- If it drips again, call a technician. Don't open the unit or touch wiring with wet hands, because water and electricity are dangerous together.
