Before the work starts
- Decide where the indoor unit goes: high on a wall, with the airflow not blowing straight at the bed or sofa.
- The outdoor unit needs open space, shade if possible, and a firm place to stand. The shorter the pipe run between the two units, the better.
- Ask what the price includes: pipes, wiring, stand, drain pipe and any extra length.
A proper install includes
- Drain pipe sloping downwards so water runs out, not back.
- Pipe joints tightened and the pipes covered with insulation.
- Air removed from the pipes before the gas is opened. Ask the technician how they do this. Skipping it can hurt cooling and the compressor.
- Both units fixed firmly, and the AC tested for cooling and noise before you pay.
Electrical and height safety
An AC draws a lot of power, so it needs wiring and a socket or breaker suited to it. A thin wire or a loose plug can overheat. Ask a trained electrician or the technician to check the wiring and don't use a multi-plug for an AC. Fitting the outdoor unit on an upper floor means working at height. Leave it to the technician and don't lean out of a window to help.
