Habits that help
- Don't set the lowest temperature. A moderate setting, often around 24 to 26 degrees, is easier on the AC and on the bill.
- Keep doors and windows shut while it runs, and close curtains on the side the sun hits.
- Use the sleep or timer mode at night instead of running it all hours.
- Switch off or limit other heat sources in the room, like an iron or a bulb that is not needed.
Small fixes that help
- Wash the filter regularly. A blocked filter makes the AC work harder.
- Keep the outdoor unit in shade where possible, with free space around it, and clear leaves and dust from it.
- Get a service before summer. Dirty coils and low gas make the AC run longer for less cooling.
- If the room stays hot, check gaps under doors and the roof above before blaming the AC.
Check the size and the type too
An AC that is too small runs nonstop, and an old non-inverter AC uses more electricity than an inverter one in long daily use. If your bill is high every month, our guides on room size and inverter AC can help you decide before you buy again.
